  • Installation Tips and Pointers
    • For those who want to hire out the work, Freeman's Signs has a form you can fill out to request repair.  From their website ask them to send you the Timber Bend mailbox repair form via email.  Check the boxes and send them a check, and they will come out and make the repairs.
    • If you are a do it yourselfer:
    • The post and other wooden members can be painted with the Timber Bend color of latex paint.
    • The metal address panels can be cleaned up by waxing them with car wax.  If the numbers need replaced, you can get adhesive numbers from Freeman's signs 317-272-2663.
    • For the mailbox, you can paint with latex, however, for a better quality result, use enamel paint purchased from Sherwin Williams and spray it with an HVLP spray gun. This equipment is not very expensive, a paint spray gun was like $35 at Harbor Freight in Plainfield.  (If you really wanted to do it correctly, you can get the correct Timber Bend color in an automotive paint, such as from NAPA - which will be far more durable and remain shiny for way longer than the Sherwin Williams.)
    • If your post is rotten down below the dirt you will need to replace it. Rough sawn cedar 6x6 is what is needed-  84 Lumber on the way to Danville on US 36 has such items, and you will need to do table sawing and woodworking to get the top right. An 8 foot post is about $90.  You can also try splicing in a new piece as shown here for a porch post https://www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-repair-rotted-porch-post.  Alternatively, you can purchase a pre-made post from Freeman's signs 317-272-2663 .
    • If other parts of the mailbox are rotted, you can make your own using the rotted piece as a template, or purchase pre-made parts from Freeman's signs 317-272-2663
    • The mailbox carried by The Plainfield DO IT BEST Hardware is an exact match with a very nice metal flag. Some people think this is a better box than the plastic flag box that Lowes sells. It is about $35.
    • The brass strips are available at most of the independent hardware stores and you can likely order it online. They are about 3/8" to 1/4" wide. Just drill a hole where it overlaps and use a brass brad to hold it all together.  Flat Strips - K & S Precision Metals: Full Line Metal Specialists
